The Rich History of Southport Lights

Southport, a coastal town in North Carolina, has a rich history of lights. The Cape Fear River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Southport, has been an important shipping route since the colonial times. To aid navigation, the government built several lighthouses along the coast in the 19th century. The oldest of these, the Bald Head Island Lighthouse, was built in 1817 and still stands today, although it is no longer in use. In addition to lighthouses, Southport also had several range lights and beacons that guided ships into the river.

The Modern Southport Lights

Today, Southport’s lights serve a different purpose: to create a charming and magical atmosphere for tourists and locals alike. Every December, the town is transformed into a sparkling wonderland for the Southport Winterfest. The streets are adorned with thousands of twinkling lights, creating a festive ambiance that attracts visitors from far and wide.

The centerpiece of the Southport Winterfest is the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which takes place in the evening of the first Friday in December. The tree, which usually stands at the intersection of Howe and Moore Streets, is towering and magnificent, decorated with hundreds of ornaments and thousands of LEDs. The ceremony is a beloved tradition that brings the community together with music, food, and joy.

In addition to the Christmas tree lighting, Southport also offers several other light-related events during the winter months. The “Light Up the Night” boat parade, which takes place on the first Saturday in December, is a spectacle to behold. Dozens of boats, large and small, decorate themselves with colorful lights and sail along the waterfront, entertaining crowds of spectators.

Southport Lights Beyond Winterfest

Although the Southport Winterfest is the highlight of the town’s light-related events, Southport offers enchanting light displays throughout the year. One of the most notable is the Oak Island Lighthouse, which stands at the southern end of the historic Yacht Basin. At night, the lighthouse glows with a steady beam that can be seen for miles. The surrounding harbor is also illuminated, casting a soft glow on the boats moored there.

Another destination for light lovers is the Southport Waterfront Park, which offers stunning views of the Cape Fear River and its bridges. The park is lined with lamp posts that are decorated with banners and seasonal decorations. The park’s pier, which extends out into the river, is also lit up at night, creating a romantic and serene atmosphere.

Southport lights are more than just beautiful decorations: they are symbols of the town’s history and community spirit. From the Bald Head Island Lighthouse to the Southport Winterfest to the Oak Island Lighthouse to the Waterfront Park, Southport offers a plethora of light-related activities for locals and tourists alike. Whether you love history, festivity, or serenity, Southport lights have something for everyone.
